Puno
The Tiahuanacos inhabited in Puno (800 A.D. – 1200 A.D.), they were the highest cultural expression of the Aymara people, who were established in what is today Peru and Bolivia.
In the fifteenth century these lands were taken over by the Incas, but years later the Spanish were attracted by the mining industry developed there, who left an important Colonial legacy throughout the entire area.
Puno city is located at 3,287 masl, lies on the shores of Lake Titicaca which is the highest navigable lake of the world. Puno is the folklore capital of Peru and the site of the Feast of the Virgen de la Candelaria. A few minutes from the city, you can visit the spectacular Chullpas de Sillustani, a complex of impressive burial towers built by the Kollas; Juli is famous for its beautiful colonial Churches; Lampa with its vice royal church built between 1675 and 1685; Llanchón, a community that still maintains its customs and cultural expressions; and Pucara, famous for its pottery and for the “Toritos de Pucara” which today are made from clay by the local artisans.
The lake contains numerous islands, whose habitants still maintain their customs and traditions. An example of this are The Uros, they live in a group of “floating islands” which are artificial made entery of totota reeds and their boats are made from the same material. Taquile, Sausi and Amantani are famous for their skill in weaving, their pre-Columbian constructions and kindness of their residents.
